THE TECHNICAL EXPLANATION
The LGBTQIA+ dollar index uses estimated population data for a given year for the LGBTQIA+ community. Then compares the data with a component of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), known as Household Consumption Expenditures (HCE). By combining the two data sources, we can forecast the value of the global LGBTQIA+ dollar.
The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a measure of all goods and services produced in any given country within a year. The measurement helps investors and spectators understand how well a country is performing. The GDP is made up of many components; however, one key indicator is the HCE, which measures the number of goods and services purchased by households in that country. The HCE is a good indicator of how much individuals are spending each year and includes food, clothing, cars, rent, personal services, etc.
The LGBTQIA+ dollar index is based on U.S Dollars
GDP STATISTICS
The LGBTQIA+ population volumes used in the index are based on several averages that helped us to establish the following conservative estimates against the total population:
The index has been compiled from country-specific information obtained from the United Nations – National Accounts – Analysis of Main Aggregates (AMA)

section
two
To understand the LGBTQIA+ dollar for each country, we first need to establish the per-person cost by combining the HCE and population volumes for the same period. For example, in the 2018 LGBTQIA+ dollar index, we combined:
By dividing the HCE by the population volume, we can establish a cost per person.
- 2017 HCE total spend
- 2017 total population volume
By dividing the HCE by the population volume, we can establish a cost per person.
The total cost per person is conservative as it includes everyone, children and adults; however, it provides a reasonable estimate of the total spend per person.
Extraordinary people
Over the past 50 years, the LGBTQIA+ global community has seen many positive developments, with rights and protections for its members greatly enhanced. These changes are a direct result of the extraordinary individuals who have stood up, often at considerable personal risk, to advocate for and defend community rights. Discover more about some of these remarkable individuals today.
section
three
Now that we have the cost per person, we can establish the total spend within the LGBTQIA+ community; we achieve this by combining:
- 2017 cost per person – by country (defined in the previous section)
- 2017 LGBTQIA+ population estimates – by country

important things to
about the index
As the saying goes, money makes the world go around, and, like all ethnic groups, nationalities, and communities, LGBTQIA+ individuals contribute to their local countries and the global economy. The concept and size of the LGBTQIA+ spend have been around for many years and are often referred to as the Pink Pound or Gay Dollar. The global Pink Pound is significant and, combined, would rank 14th out of 190 countries in 2019, ahead of countries such as Mexico ($1.15 trillion) and Indonesia ($1.01 trillion).
Whether in the workforce, in retirement, or in further education, LGBTQIA+ individuals of all ages contribute financially. From paying their rent and buying food and clothing to taking an annual vacation, all these transactions support a country’s and the world’s economy. The more money an individual or group has, the greater their purchasing power. The greater the spending power, the more influence that person or group has, especially in how they are treated.
Even though there are many professionals in the LGBTQIA+ community, there are disturbing statistics concerning their treatment. It is estimated that over 40% of all homeless young adults and minors identify as LGBTQIA+, either thrown out of their homes or running away because of how they identify. With many youths homeless, some struggle to receive a basic education, affecting the rest of their lives. In some countries, transgender individuals struggle to find work due to society’s lack of acceptance of their identity, forcing some into sex work or low-paid employment.
The LGBTQIA+ dollar index is based on U.S Dollars ($). It is compiled using the global community population and the Household Consumption Expenditure (HCE) component of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for each country worldwide. The HCE is then applied to the population estimates within the LGBTQ+ Population Index to estimate the average spending per person by country, region, and continent.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: The LGBTQIA+ Worldwide dollar index is based on conservative estimates relating to the global community’s size, applied to the total population recorded for a given year. We cannot accurately determine the number of LGBTQIA+ individuals living in any given country. There are no official censuses that focus specifically on sexual orientations or gender identities; therefore, the volumes are based on reasonable estimates. We acknowledge that the actual size may be higher or lower than our estimates in certain countries. The index is a global index and will include countries where identifying as LGBTQIA+ is considered illegal or where the individual is likely to be persecuted. The estimates are applied to the entire world population.
