  • Without an official census, conservative estimates predict that under 2% of women worldwide identify as Lesbian; however, some estimates are as high as 10%. Statistically, women are more likely to be open about identifying as LGBTQIA+ than men
  • The term “lesbian” is derived from the name of the Greek island, Lesbos. The island was the Greek female poet’s birthplace, Sappho, who proclaimed her love for women within her poetry. While the term Lesbian refers only to female homosexuality, the word ‘gay’ can refer to all members of the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Lavender rhinoceroses are used as a symbol for the Lesbian community. A rhino was used because they are typically docile but become ferocious when provoked
  • Despite the sigmatism and potential persecution, Lesbians serving in the armed forces thrived during World War II. Many met other Lesbians and fell in love. In Germany, the Nazis persecuted members of the LGBTQIA+ community under morality laws. Within concentration camps, gay men would be made to wear a pink triangle, whereas Lesbians were required to wear a black triangle
  • In the 1920s, African-American Lesbians and Gay men played a crucial role in the Harlem Renaissance, a movement that was an intellectual, social, and artistic explosion centred around Harlem in New York City
